Massage and Cancer: What’s Safe, What’s Supportive

Oncology Massage: Gentle, Informed Care When It Matters Most

For a long time, I hesitated to label what we offer as oncology massage or massage for cancer. Not because it isn’t accurate — but because my approach has always been about treating the whole person, not defining someone by a diagnosis.

However, after conversations with clients who didn’t realise we could safely support them during or after cancer treatment, it became clear that by not naming it, I was unintentionally making this care less visible. So here it is — we are trained to offer safe, thoughtful and appropriate massage for those affected by cancer.

What makes oncology massage different?

Oncology massage isn’t a single technique or routine. What sets it apart is the level of consideration given to a client’s health, medical history and current stage of treatment or recovery.

Every aspect of the massage is adapted — positioning, pressure, pace, duration and focus — based on how the body presents on the day. This work requires careful assessment, sensitivity and the ability to adjust rather than follow a fixed protocol.

When I first trained as a massage therapist, cancer was considered a complete contraindication. Thankfully, understanding has evolved, and we now know that massage, when delivered appropriately and safely, can be deeply supportive for people affected by cancer.

Working to recognised standards

Staying informed and working to best practice is a vital part of offering safe touch in cancer care. I regularly use the resources provided by SATCC (the Standards Authority for Touch in Cancer Care), which offers clear guidance, training information and often shares the latest research relating to touch therapies for people living with and beyond cancer.

This matters because oncology massage is not about being light, fluffy or superficial. It is about listening — to the client and to the tissue — and responding with skill, sensitivity and professionalism.

A key principle is to feel what is happening beneath your hands, allowing the tissue to guide the treatment. There is no forcing, no pushing through discomfort, and no assumption that deeper pressure equals better results.

Why “less is more”

This philosophy runs through all my treatments, but it is especially important here. Massage should never be painful. Pain does not equal healing; it usually indicates irritation or overload.

Many people affected by cancer are already managing discomfort, fatigue or heightened sensitivity. The aim of oncology massage is to leave you feeling eased and supported — physically and emotionally — not sore or overwhelmed.

You may have heard me say “a nice ouch?” — but even that has its limits. With oncology massage, we work well within what the body can comfortably receive.

Supporting the nervous system and emotional wellbeing

Cancer and its treatments place significant stress on the body and mind. Ongoing stress can have physical effects, and massage can help create a calmer physiological environment.

Gentle, responsive touch supports the nervous system, encouraging relaxation and helping the body move out of a heightened stress response. This can be particularly valuable for emotional wellbeing, mood and overall resilience during what is often a challenging time.

Sleep disturbance is also common for people affected by cancer. Massage can support better sleep by promoting relaxation and encouraging the body into a more restful state — something that is essential for recovery and immune health.

A holistic approach to care

I never set out to keep this support quiet. My approach with every client is holistic — considering the whole body and the wider picture. I am always happy to suggest or refer to other trusted practitioners such as Pilates instructors, nutritionists, acupuncturists or osteopaths where appropriate.

We also offer Cancer Touch / Light Touch Therapy, a beautifully effective treatment that can be beneficial for many people, not just those affected by cancer. At the heart of this work is comfort, reassurance and wellbeing.

My aim is to offer the best possible care, and to ensure that my team continues to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to support clients safely and professionally.

If you would like to talk about whether oncology massage or light touch therapy might be suitable for you, we are always happy to have a quiet, no-pressure conversation.

Treatments Suitable During and After Cancer

The Spurgeon Method®

I have had the privilege of training in The Spurgeon Method®, developed by Sally Spurgeon — a highly effective massage and bodywork protocol designed to support the upper torso, including the chest, breast area, shoulders and arms.

Sally developed this method following her own experience of breast cancer surgery and ongoing post-surgical pain and restriction. The result is a thoughtful, intelligent protocol that addresses discomfort, oedema and reduced range of movement in a safe, considered way.

What has been most valuable in my learning is understanding that The Spurgeon Method® is not just for those affected by breast cancer. It is suitable for anyone experiencing pain, restriction, tightness or loss of movement through the upper body.

The treatment uses a carefully integrated approach, combining:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) techniques

  • Myofascial Release

  • Muscle Energy Techniques (MET)

Together, these help release general adhesions, improve mobility and support tissue health. While the breast area may be included where appropriate, it typically forms only a small part of the treatment — this is very much a whole upper-torso approach.

The method is suitable for all genders and can be particularly helpful following:

  • Breast or chest surgery

  • Restricted shoulder or arm movement

  • Ongoing upper body tension or discomfort

When delivered by a suitably trained therapist, it is also safe for those who have had breast surgery, including lymph node removal, with all work adapted to the individual.

I’m very much looking forward to supporting clients with this method — it is a powerful, respectful and highly effective way of working with the body.
