Why I Believe Beauty Apprenticeships Are One of the Best Ways Into Our Industry
I'll be upfront - I'm probably not the most objective person to write this. As a salon owner, industry speaker, judge and ambassador for apprenticeships, I've spent years championing this route into our industry. But that's precisely why I feel so strongly about it. I've seen what it does for people. And I've seen what happens when that foundation isn't there.
The beauty industry has changed enormously since I started my career. But one thing hasn't: you cannot shortcut experience.
Learning Beyond The Classroom
Beauty therapy is, at its core, a hands-on profession. You can study anatomy, consultation theory and product ingredients from a textbook, and that knowledge matters but it only takes you so far. What really shapes a therapist is working with real clients, alongside a real team, in a real salon environment.
That's what an apprenticeship gives you that a classroom alone simply can't.
I'm not just talking about learning treatments. I'm talking about learning how to communicate with a nervous client, how to manage your time when you're fully booked, how to handle the unexpected, how to present yourself professionally every single day. Those skills aren't taught - they're developed. And they take time.
Why This Matters To Me
I've always believed our industry thrives when we invest properly in people. Too often there's pressure on young therapists to qualify quickly and arrive knowing everything. The reality is that becoming an exceptional therapist takes time, support, practice and the right guidance. That's not a weakness — that's just how it works.
An apprenticeship creates the space for that to happen properly.
Training At The Fountain
At The Fountain, training has always been at the heart of what we do. Our therapists receive thorough in-house training for our Signature Treatments, and we invest heavily in professional brand education and advanced treatment training with brands including Environ, Natura Bissé and Cellstory.
We currently work with Kleek as our external training provider, which means our apprentices benefit from structured qualifications, assessments and dedicated support combined with the day-to-day reality of working within a professional salon environment.
For us, training isn't a one-off event. It's ongoing. It's part of who we are.
More Than Just Learning Treatments
A good beauty therapist doesn't just perform treatments. They build relationships, educate their clients, understand skin on a deeper level and create experiences that make people feel genuinely better about themselves. Those qualities don't appear overnight. They develop over time, with the right support around you.
In my experience, apprenticeships are one of the best environments in which that can happen.
